Inlays and Onlays
Dentists use inlays and onlays to repair cavities that are too large for a filling but not significant enough to justify a crown or a cap.
They will stop tooth decay before it becomes more serious, preventing the need for more invasive treatment.
- Inlays — An inlay goes inside the tooth and provides more strength than a standard filling can provide. Inlays typically go into molars, as we tend to subject them to more pressure when chewing.
- Onlays — Your dentist will recommend an onlay if a corner of your tooth has been damaged by decay, as opposed to the centre. The onlay replaces the damaged edge to provide a naturally even, rounded tooth surface.
You will need two appointments to have an inlay or onlay fitted. The dentist will take an impression of the tooth at your initial appointment and send it to a lab, where a technician will create your inlay or onlay. At your second appointment, the dentist will fit the inlay or onlay to your tooth. Inlays and onlays come in a range of materials, including porcelain or a composite resin blend that matches your natural tooth colour.
